Mental Health Awareness Month: Let’s Talk About Stress

Category:Wellness

Some things don’t knock, they just show up, settle in, and suddenly you’re dealing with the aftermath. Stress is one of them. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s everywhere. A significant proportion of doctor visits are linked to stress-related conditions , and over half of adults feel significant stress every single day.

The World Health Organization defines stress as the body’s natural physical and mental response to pressure, threats, or change, triggering that well-known “fight-or-flight” mode. A little stress (called eustress) can actually boost performance and keep you motivated. But when it lingers too long, it turns into distress—and that’s where the problems begin.

Stress affects both body and mind. It releases hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, raising your heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing. While helpful in short bursts, long-term stress can lead to fatigue, headaches, weakened immunity, digestive issues, anxiety, and even heart disease.

In low-resource settings, stress often goes unnoticed or untreated. Challenges like poverty, limited healthcare access, and cultural expectations to “tough it out” push mental health down the priority list. The result? A cycle where high stress meets low support.

So how do you know you’re stressed?

Stress doesn’t always announce itself clearly; it shows up in different ways:

· Physical: headaches, muscle tension, fatigue, stomach issues

· Emotional: irritability, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed

· Behavioral: poor sleep, changes in appetite, withdrawal, difficulty concentrating

Ignoring these signs, especially through denial, can make things worse over time. Awareness is the first step to taking back control.

Simple ways to manage stress (that actually work):

· Move your body: A walk, stretch, or quick workout can reset your mind

· Pause and breathe: Mindfulness or even 10 deep breaths can calm your system

· Eat well: Whole foods help your body handle stress better

· Sleep matters: A consistent sleep routine is a game-changer

· Set boundaries: Not everything deserves your energy

· Stay connected: Talk to someone, you don’t have to carry it alone

· Do what you love: Hobbies are more powerful than they seem

Natural support options

Some supplements may support stress management, but they should be used with guidance from a qualified healthcare professional.

· Ashwagandha: Helps lower cortisol, reduce anxiety, and improve sleep

· Magnesium glycinate: Supports relaxation and better sleep without harsh side effects

· Herbal teas & supplements: Gentle, natural ways to calm the nervous system

Stress is real, but so is support. This month, take a moment to check in with yourself. And remember, with C&A Pharmacy as your health partner, you don’t have to navigate this journey alone. Whether it’s expert advice or the right support products, we’re here to help you stay balanced, healthy, and well.
